Green Engineering: Solar Ovens
Enduring Understandings
Essential Questions
Skills and Objectives
Students will:
- Technology is any tool designed by engineers to solve problems.
- A green engineer analyzes resource use in technology and the resulting impact.
- Green engineers analyze a product’s life cycle looking for the resources required to make the product and the impact that comes from its manufacture and use.
- Some materials conduct heat more readily than others; some materials have a higher impact on the environment than others.
Essential Questions
- What is technology and where does it come from?
- What is a green engineer?
- How does a green engineer measure environmental impact?
- What materials are good thermal insulators AND have a low impact on the environment?
- How can we design a solar oven that has minimal environmental impact?
Skills and Objectives
Students will:
- find and analyze problems in designs
- discuss the effectiveness of various (proposed) designs
- conduct tests, looking at one variable per test
- prove that energy can be transferred
- use the engineering cycle to create a solar oven
