Word Work
Word Work routines in the classroom are designed to immerse students in a vocabulary rich environment and provide instruction in words and word-learning strategies. These routines will help kids explore both the structural analysis, and the contextual analysis of words, in order to help them expand their vocabulary.
Structural Analysis: examining the meaningful parts of words like root words, prefixes, and suffixes
Contextual Analysis: scrutinizing the surrounding text for clues to word meanings.
My goal is to provide the students with classroom experiences and vocabulary instruction that are multifaceted. Our new routines consist of four components that are known to be effective for promoting vocabulary.
1. providing rich and varied language experiences
2. the teaching of word parts
3. teaching word learning strategies
4. fostering word consciousness
